Easy Weekly Meal Prep for Beginners

A simple, step-by-step way to start meal prepping: plan, shop once, cook in batches and eat well all week.

Start small

Don't try to prep 21 meals in your first week. Pick one meal — usually lunch — and prep it for 3 to 5 days. Once that feels easy, add dinners.

Choose recipes that reheat well: grain bowls, stews, curries, roasted vegetables and baked proteins are reliable starters.

Plan before you shop

Write down which meals you'll eat on which days, then list every ingredient. Group the list by shop section so you move through the store quickly.

Reuse ingredients across recipes. A bag of spinach can go into a pasta, a frittata and a smoothie.

Cook in batches

Start whatever takes longest first — rice, grains, or a tray of roasting vegetables — then prepare proteins and sauces while they cook.

Let food cool before sealing it, store it in the fridge, and eat refrigerated prepped meals within about 3 to 4 days. Freeze portions you'll eat later in the week.

Keep it interesting

Prep a base and vary the toppings: the same chicken and rice becomes a burrito bowl one day and a lemon-herb salad the next.
